Doctor Who: The Movie

Premise: After being shot beside the TARDIS, the Seventh Doctor becomes the Eighth. And on the streets of San Francisco – alongside new ally Grace Holloway - he battles the Master.

Notes: This movie was intended as a pilot for an American produced revival of the show, however the ratings in America did not fare well and so a series was never commissioned. A new, much larger TARDIS interior was created and the Sonic Screwdriver makes it's first appearance since 1982, after it was destroyed in the Fifth Doctor story, The Visitation. A new CGI title sequence was also created, featuring the logo from seasons seven to ten. In the UK broadcast version, cuts were made to the gunfight scene (along with the Doctor's operation scene) in the wake of the Dunblane school massacre earlier that year. It was the only televised story featuring Paul McGann as the Doctor, although he has done many audio dramas since then.

Verdict: Paul McGann is great and Eric Roberts Master is exceptionally dark and villainous, but other than that there's not a whole lot going on here. The plot is weak and has many continuity errors. The resolution is convoluted and confusing. Basically, it's all flash and no substance. However, that flash is just enough to carry the film and makes it fairly enjoyable. The Doctor threatening to shoot himself is a particularly memorable moment 6/10
